When you power on the device, you're presented with a gorgeous 128 x 256-pixel, 65,000-color screen. The cartoon like menu is easy to see and understand, consisting of Music, Movie, Record, Voice, Fm Radio, Photo, Setup, E-Book, Game.

In Play mode, a fresh graphic equalizer moves to the beat in the centre. Repeat, EQ, Volume, battery and Time elapsed are on the top row. On the bottom row sits Folder, Song name , file type, bitrate, song length and lyrics if available.

At 42 x 80 x 14 mm and 50g, the SYM-405 is amazing small and light.. The device feels sturdy; all of the buttons give a responsive click and are tightly set into the casing. Been a flash memory based player, the SYM-405 does not contain any moving parts, perfect for the gym and outdoor activities.

Built into the player is a small but loud speaker, the sound is quiet clear at low to medium levels and comes in handy when you want to tune in to your favorite sports stations on the FM radio. The speaker automatically switches on when no output device is attached to the headphone jack.

OTEK wisely includes an FM tuner that supports as many as 20 presets. The player also includes FM and line-in recording capabilities. Also, although you can adjust the bitrate--all recordings are saved as MP3 files ranging from 16Kbps to 192Kbps.

Another great feature of the OTEK SYM-405 is its ability to be firmware upgradable. New Firmware's are regularly developed and supported by many online communities, however the manufacturer recommends the standard firmware as you may void warranty conditions by incorrectly flashing the firmware..

Performance
Audio quality is the another area in which the OTEK SYM-405 truly shines. The 85dB signal-to-noise ratio delivers a clean sound with good high and low response. With an output of 10mW per channel at 320ohms, its sound is sufficiently loud with the included stereo headphones. Along with Six preset EQ modes, the SYM-405 includes extra Bass effects. You can also adjust the EQ settings while in playback mode for Music and Video.

Line-in recordings made from another digital player played out pretty decently.

The OTEK's transfer rate of 3.38MB per second over a USB 2.0 connection is better than average. The player will mount on also any operating system as a removable FAT or NTFS hard drive. The 10 hour battery life is pumped out by the rechargeable Li-polymer battery. Full charging time takes about 2 hours.
