  • A new addition to Canon’s lineup of PowerShot A-series digital cameras, the PowerShot A700 boasts a variety of newly added features to satisfy users at any level. Equipped with a 6x optical zoom lens, which is the highest in the A series, the A700 offers a level of imaging performance often found only in more expensive higher-end camera models. Also contributing to superior imaging performance is a newly incorporated 6.0-megapixel CCD sensor, 2.5-inch LCD monitor, and High ISO Auto function.

The new PowerShot A700 covers all the bases, offering novice users a rich choice of 20 preset modes for any situation, while at the same time allowing advanced users to hone their skills with manual settings approaching the level of a single lens reflex camera. The A700 further delivers dependable shooting performance with improved handling features, including a natural cylindrical grip that fits firmly and comfortably in the hands.

CANON'S FORMULA FOR AMAZING DIGITAL PHOTOS

The A700 is, unsurprisingly, very similar in appearance to the other cameras in the A series; slightly boxy but pretty solid and well-finished (though compared to the A620, for example, it feels very lightweight). What is slightly surprising is the size; the A700 is remarkably small, especially considering the fact it sports a full 6x optical zoom (it's considerably less bulky than the A620, for example). Control layout will be familiar to anyone who has ever used an A series PowerShot. External controls are fairly minimal considering the huge feature set, with most everyday shooting functions accessed via the excellent FUNC menu - although I was very disappointed to again, there isn't a dedicated ISO button (which has started to appear on Ixus / Elph models, so why not here?). One change from last year's high end A series is the screen; it's bigger (2.5 inch), but doesn't offer the very useful tilt 'n' swing movements seen on the A620.

    OPERATION AND CONTROLS

Canon has found a formula for camera operation and control that works well, and the A700 will be very familiar to anyone who's used a Canon compact in the last few years. The control layout is almost identical to the other models a the top of the A series range. As mentioned earlier I was disappointed to see that the ISO button (seen on the latest Ixus / Elph models) still hasn't made its way onto the A700. As first seen on the A610 and A620, there is a dedicated AE compensation button (which also switches between apertures and shutter speeds in manual mode).

Despite being a 'budget' model the A700 - like the other top end A series cameras before it - has a real wealth of photographic features, and though most advanced options are only accessible via menus (rather than via external controls), the interface is well designed and fast to use.

    Canon PowerShot A700

As with all A series PowerShots, the A700 is powered by AA batteries (two in this case). Rechargeable (NiMH) batteries are not supplied in the box.The good news is that battery life is superb - Canon quotes 400 shots (using the CIPA standard, LCD monitor on) from a fully charged set of NiMH cells, and up to 1000 shots if you turn the LCD off and use the viewfinder.

    Canon PowerShot A700

The card slot sits under the same fairly sturdy hinged door at the base of the grip. The design means you have to be slightly careful when removing the card to remember to hold the camera upside down or your batteries will be on the floor. Our experience bore this out. Impressive.

    Canon PowerShot A700

A flexible plastic cap on the left side of the body (viewed from the back) covers the A700's ports. Underneath you'll find AV and USB connections, plus a socket for the optional AC adaptor.

    Canon PowerShot A700

Compact and elegantly designed, the optional High-Power Flash HF-DC1 complements your PowerShot perfectly and requires no accessory shoe. With a strong light output (guide number 59 ft.) and wide angular field (28mm), it delivers proper illumination up to approximately 30 feet and in all zoom positions.

Canon PowerShot A700 The built in flash offers Auto, On, Off, Red-Eye Reduction On or Auto. The flash range in Normal mode is from 47 cm - 3.0 m (W)/47 cm - 2.0 m (T) (1.5 - 9.8 ft. (W)/1.5 - 6.6 ft. (T)). In Macro mode the coverage is from 30 - 47 cm (11.8 in. - 1.5 ft.) (W/T). (When ISO speed is set to AUTO.)
